Explore the history and landscapes that have shaped the industrial and mining heartland of the Basque Country

A trip to iron’s heart

Meatza offers a glimpse into the past of Meatzaldea and Enkarterri, always linked to iron mining and the powerful Basque industrial revolution. Although the last mines closed in the mid-20th century, the remains of the mining facilities that have shaped our landscape for centuries still survive.

We invite you to explore our rich historical heritage through the shafts, tunnels, loading bays and industrial landscapes that reveal the essence of our land. A fascinating journey that takes you through the hills of Triano to the cliffs of the Cantabrian Sea, following in the footsteps of iron and the thousands of workers who dedicated their lives to mining.
